Education means a continuous reconstruction.we find that the present system of education in India has lost that dynamic character. Critical analysis of the whole problem will show that none of the aims – Vocational, knowledge, moral, social, personality building, living- has been fulfilled in India.
The education given in our schools and colleges is isolated from life. The curriculum as formulated and as presented through the traditional methods of teaching does not give the students insight into the everyday world in which they are living. When they complete their studies, they feel ill-adjusted in society.
The education system must make its contribution to the development of healthy habits, attitudes and qualities of character so that the students become responsible and disciplined citizens of the country after the completion of their studies.
Such a development is not possible until a suitable atmosphere has been provided to the students during their academic career. Through the spectacles of books our students have seen the panorama of the vast world, but through their own naked eyes they may not get even a bird’s eye view of the things they are to face in life. There is a wide gap between theory and practice.
Personality is to man what perfume is to flower. Education must aim at an all-round development of the personality of the students. The education imparted in our schools and colleges fails to train and develop the whole personality of the students.
Inculcation of proper discipline and moral values among the students is becoming an arduous job because of the absence of personal contact between the teachers and the taught these days. Our schools and colleges are over-crowded. Besides, the average efficiency of the teachers has deteriorated.
Indians are revolutionary by theory and evolutionary by practice. They are good planners but bad executors. The promise of our policy-makers to provide free and compulsory education to the children of the age group of 6-14 by 1964, has remained unfulfilled even after 60 years of independence.
Every institution has its own syllabus and medium of instruction. Central Higher Secondary Schools, Navodaya Schools, state-run schools and private schools have different syllabus and no clear-cut policy. There is hardly any uniformity of purpose or policy of education. Moneyed people can secure admission for their children in any technical or professional institution.
There has been a mushroom growth of academies and other private educational institutions. These institutions have by and large become business concerns. The evil of tuition- mongering is on the rise. There is a plethora of government-run and private institutions.
The necessary evil of examination has adversely affected our whole system of education Examination today has become a gamble and a feat memory. The whole system of examination is haphazardly planned. The phenomenon of educated unemployment in a country like India is a product of the ill-planned system. Degrees have failed to serve as a passport for a job.
It is high time now that we evolved a sound and uniform policy of education. Illiteracy has got to be removed from the country. Over-crowding in the schools and colleges has to be curtailed by opening new institutions both in the rural and urban areas.
The economic lot of the teachers should be improved so that the profession may be able to attract the best talent. Education must be purposive and not divorced from the social life. Government should allot a good part of its revenues to promote the growth of education along healthy path
